Pirate Double Feature – Sunday July 7, Starting at 11am
CHARLIE’S PICK OF THE MONTH
Long John Silver (1953)
Continuing the story after Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, Long John Silver (Robert Newton) returns to the Caribbean, where he has his sights on a rival pirate that has taken a ship, the governor’s daughter and his young friend, Jim Hawkins.
TRIVIA NUGGET: Robert Newton’s exaggerated West Country accent he used for Long John Solver has become the stereotypical ‘pirate voices’ standard of film. The actor had other memorable roles, such as Bill Sykes in 1948’s Oliver Twist and Inspector Javert in 1952’s Les Miserables.
Blackbeard, the Pirate (1952)
An admiralty officer tries to bring the infamous pirate to justice by infiltrating his crew. Robert Newton portrays the legendary captain in this 50’s swashbuckler that also stars William Bendix and Linda Darnell as a kidnapped beauty that gets caught between feuding pirates.
